Creationism Creeps into U.S. Classrooms
11:47 am

Frightening report about how many schools in the United States are still teaching religious dogma in the science classroom despite a federal ban on the practice.

One in eight U.S. high school biology teachers presents creationism or intelligent design in a positive light in the classroom, a new survey shows, despite a federal court's recent ban against it.

And a quarter of the nation's high school biology teachers say they devoted at least one or two classroom hours to the topics, with about half presenting it favorably and half presenting it as an invalid alternative.

Vatican Says Aliens Could Exist
11:03 am

In just another way to fit the ever-shrinking Biblical ideals into the scientific world around us, the Vatican has stated that Martian life could exist and that it doesn't contradict the idea that God created the universe. In order to maintain the crazy ideas in the Bible, though, they've also stated that this life may be "free from original sin". You're probably as confused as I am.

Just as there are multiple forms of life on earth, so there could exist intelligent beings in outer space created by God. And some aliens could even be free from original sin, he speculates.

Asked about the Catholic Church's condemnation four centuries ago of the Italian astronomer and physicist, Galileo, Father Funes diplomatically says mistakes were made, but it is time to turn the page and look towards the future.

Science and religion need each other, and many astronomers believe in God, he assures readers.

Einstein Calls Belief in God 'Childish'
9:02 pm

Finally clearing up one of the most misunderstood quotes of our generation is a paper to be auctioned off this week, authenticated as genuinely written by the hands of Albert Einstein. Famous for his equation relating matter and energy, his statement "God does not play dice" led many to believe that he was, himself, a religious person. A new letter, however, clearly states that a belief in a god is a "weakness of humanity".

Born to a Jewish family in Germany in 1879, he also adds that "for me, the Jewish religion like all other religions is an incarnation of the most childish superstitions."

He also wrote "the Jewish people to whom I gladly belong, and with whose mentality I have a deep affinity have no different quality for me than all other people.

“As far as my experience goes, they are also no better than other human groups, although they are protected from the worst cancers by a lack of power. Otherwise I cannot see anything 'chosen' about them."

Evolution: What's the Real Controversy?
8:48 pm

The scientific study of evolution is filled with controversies. That was one of the messages coming out of a two-day symposium on the latest in research from the field that was hosted by Rockefeller University last week. I'll discuss the scientific details of some of the talks separately, but it's worth analyzing these controversies in light of the "academic freedom" bills that are being considered by a number of states, which purport to protect teachers who discuss controversies regarding evolution.

Nationwide, nearly half a dozen states are considering variants of such bills, some of which throw in the origin of life and climate change for good measure. Legislators in Florida recently introduced such a bill in response to new educational standards that were the first to formalize the teaching of evolution. Althought two incompatible bills passed the state House and Senate, they died when the legislature went out of session; similar measures are still pending in other states. These bills appear to have originated at the pro-Intelligent Design thinktank the Discovery Institute, and constitute part of its latest effort towards reducing the teaching of evolution in public schools.

Pregnant Woman Sees Jesus Image in Ultrasound
10:03 pm

Wouldn't it be funny if the baby had a genetic disorder or if she miscarried? Would it still be a miracle?

jesusultrasound.jpgWhen an Ohio woman looked at an ultrasound she expected to see a developing fetus.

Instead, she saw what she believes to be an image of Jesus Christ, MyFox Cleveland reported on its Web site.

Monet Sledge, from Lorain, Ohio, got an ultrasound in preparation for her first baby and was shocked when she saw what appeared to be an image of Christ on the Cross, the Web site reported.

She showed the image to her sister, a mother of four, to get her opinion. "I was expecting to see little body parts," Sledge's sister Tequoia Smith told MyFox Cleveland. "Like a face, arms and legs."

But she too believes saw Jesus on the cross.

"As soon as I saw it I was like oh my gosh."

"People say maybe my baby is gonna be blessed and maybe it is a good sign," said mother-to-be Sledge. "I don't know, I've done wrong in my life, maybe he's forgiven me early."

Doctors say the baby is perfectly healthy and due Aug. 12.

I've learned a lot in thirty years. I've learned who I am, what matters to me, and how to survive in a world where assimilation is the norm. Breaking those boundaries took guts. And even though they were removed during surgery in 2001, I still got 'em. I spent my days playing the drums, meddling with web design, and restoring a 1986 Porsche 944.

1986 Porsche 944 Restoration - Called the Poor Man's Porsche, the 944 has only four cyliners, puts out 150HP, and is now a classic automobile. I have attemped to bring this once-beaten vehicle back to life as a daily driver. From the engine to the interior, the story has been a long and hard one.
