My Codex Gigas

I hate my dryer. It's old. It's a Kennmore. And it was free. So I guess I don't hate it that much. But I've had to do the same repair more than once on it. The heater element gets so hot that it melts the power wire to the heater element itself. This has happened three times already. In addition, during my fixing it, I in inadvertently pulled the wire off the motor. There are no access panels to get to the motor at all. Not without doing this:

This is the original problem I was attempting to fix. The wire was melted exactly in the same position it was melted last time:

While cutting and splicing the wire, I managed to pull the wire off the motor that powered the heater element. Here's a picture of that. You can see the red terminal dangling in the dust.

I gave the inside of the dryer a wipedown. The lint buildup from the decade of use was quite gross but I think I managed to come out with $1 in change.

To get to the motor, you have to remove the entire front panel of the unit. To get the front panel off it's two screws and two latches. But because the dryer tumbler on the inside is quite heavy and connected to the motor which is also quite heavy, the unit doesn't want to stay 'square' when you remove the front panel. It's just easier to tilt the whole thing on its side and tear it apart.

But it was free and it's still going. And it works!
